Budget Friendly
I am sure you have heard of the tablet which is on fire right now. The AMAZON KINDLE FIRE is the best bang for its buck. At $200 it is very budget friendly and is the perfect size to carry around. It has a 7 inch screen and has its "own" OS but not really. Amazon tried to put their own OS but it relies heavily on Android. You have the Amazon Appstore and Android Market apps (but the apps are limited). You could ROOT your tablet to get the full Android experience.Another budget tablet is the NOOK TABLET which runs for $250 and is Barnes & Nobles' personal e-reader/tablet. This tablet also runs on a limited Android Market and uses B&N's own book store. You can also root the tablet to get the full Android experience.
Middle-Tier
The Asus Transformer has been one hot tablet especially because of the price it has. The 10 inch 16GB TRANSFORMER goes for $300.00! The 32GB goes for $400.00 so it is a great middle tiered tablet. It runs on Honeycomb (Android) 3.2 and has all of the apps you will need. This is probably the best middle-tiered tablet you will get... best bang for your buck.
Another tablet would be the HTC FLYER which is a 7 inch tablet and goes for $400.00. The better option would definitely be the Asus transformer. If you do not mind waiting though you should definitely wait for the ASUS TRANSFORMER PRIME which has been sold out for a while.
Top-Tier
Of course the 800-POUND GORILLA in the room is the iPad 2. The iPad may not have the best specs, and the camera may be very poor, but it does have the best apps out there. If you want a rich app filled environment this is the obvious choice. Tablet apps are amazing to have and make great use of the screen. If you are already entangled into Apple's eco-system this is the obvious route to go with. Don't forget though that the iPad 3 is RUMORED to be released in February.
If you want to try something new different I would go with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It is thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. Runs on Honeycomb 3.2 and has all of the "PRODUCTIVITY" tools that you will need.
